چکیده

The paper compares properties of 3 approximate confidence intervals on the variance component corresponding to the random factor in a general case of a mixed linear model with two variance components, supposing only that more than a minimum number of observations is available. Namely, relationships between intervals suggested by Park and Burdick [6], Hartung and Knapp [5] and Thomas and Hultquist [8] are investigated. It is shown that the latter, originally derived for an unbalanced one-way random effects model, can be used in a general case as well. The properties of the 3 intervals are illustrated also through a simulation study.
